Choosing a Location for Your Portrait Session | Longview, TX Portrait Photographer

Choosing a great location is one of the most important pieces of setting your family’s photo shoot. The backdrop you select will set the stage for the entire session and will be an essential piece of every shot, pose and, ultimately, the finished product.

I recommend picking a spot that’s special to you, either a spot you love, somewhere you frequent or a place that best represents your family, like this one. This was from an anniversary session. This gorgeous couple sat on the stairs of the church they married in ten years later with their two children! How fun is that?!

After you’ve narrowed down the list, it’s important to think about some key logistics: are there small children involved? What time of day is best for them? Are there restrooms? Do you or has your photographer brought things to entertain the kids if they don’t want to cooperate or need a distraction? (I always have bubbles!)

Is the distance from the parking to the actual shoot location far? If so, pack comfy shoes for everyone! Will there be places to change outfits, retouch hair and makeup and relax between shots?

Will there be crowds nearby—and, if so, are you comfortable shooting in front of others, like this session in Deep Ellum?

If the session is at your own home, what time of day and in which rooms is the lighting inside best?

If you plan to take it outdoors, are there locations that manicured and easy to access in your yard?

I’ve seen amazing sessions everywhere from backyards to baseball fields, lakes to open meadows. I know the area and can help make recommendations based on your family’s unique needs, personalities and inspirations. And, if you’re feeling adventurous and want to try someplace new and different, I’m always game for a little road trip! Contact me here to inquire about availability.
