Black & White – The View :: DeRidder, LA Baby Photographer

I have taken many photos this week all with the black and white assignment in mind. Most of them I took today on our little outing to Hodges Gardens. In my opinion, not every image is going to look good in black and white. You need images that are going to have a good bit of contrast to them, to make them powerful and that’s something you have to keep in mind when shooting for a black and white. The exception to this rule (and the rule is my own and may not fit everyone) is when you have moments that are seemingly timeless. Things that you know generations before you have gone through. Moments you know generations after your’s will also experience.

The photo below looked great in color, sure there are other things to create contrast to make it work as a black and white, but I think the key pieces that make it a powerful photo are:

  1. The reality of two babies and the mass destruction they can cause to a room.
  2. Β The fact that this is truly a real moment. I didn’t fix their clothes, I didn’t tidy the room, just real, honest play and the messy reality that is ever so cute – the way I will remember them.
  3. The image of them on the wall that shows them just days old in comparison to them playing together. It’s a mirror image, as well, which makes it that much more fabulous to me. Bradley’s head leaning on Will’s in the standout on the wall and he’s leaning into him as they play, too.

I can’t wait to see what y’all have come up with. Please leave your link in the comment section below so that we can all see your view of black and white.

Next week’s assignment is From a distance.

If anyone was thinking of taking a photo of the lyrics to that song, I think we are meant to be friends. If not, please disregard the previous statement πŸ™‚

I’m also including this photo in another forum called Chic Critique, which explains the link if you’d like to check it out. πŸ™‚

Have a wonderful week!

  1. Sexy. Urban. Cool. The most proud feature of this photo is that it is the first time I actually took a silhouette photo that turned out right IN CAMERA! Also, interestingly one of the models in this picture is actually mixed race (black and white) which I thought was a cool little tie-in… despite the fact her face is not shown here. Enjoy!

  2. This is my first attempt at The View. I am not a professional and am just starting to try to figure out my camera so forgive any miscues. I thought this was a cool bit of history worth sharing! Check it out!
